So most people in Middleton are immigrants or the child of one. And so far they’ve all been able to live in harmony adapting other cultures while retaining their own. But now with the White Heat around prejudice that was pretty much gone is rampant again.

So the White Martian is using the heat from the Sun to cause everyone to be extremely agitated. So something as simple as people bumping into each other like in the beginning could be catastrophic.
