The change to NCAA bylaws which allows schools to not enter athletes into the portal if a rev-share agreement releases the school from the obligation hasn’t gotten enough attention. Schools can now essentially prevent athletes from engaging with other schools during the portal.

The number one takeaway from my time working in NIL: Athletes have no idea what their actions could lead to. Very few look past the next five minutes when they get an NIL check. Even fewer have an agent/team in place willing to be the tough love the need. Check hits and repeat. It’s a brutal cycle.

This is an interesting nugget in the Pete Thamel article on Brendan Sorsby regarding NCAA gambling rules. Thamel reported Sorsby placed “thousands of bets” NCAA says “greater than $800” would lead to potential 30% of a season eligibility. That amount of bets = over $800 imo.

Good for Kalen DeBoer! That’s market forces at work. He’s getting $12.5 million per year because Alabama believes that’s his worth. The school is the arbiter of fair market value and there’s no third party that can reject the deal. Yet, athletes must submit deals to a College Sports Commission so that it, which has no basis for making “fair market value” determinations, can unilaterally and arbitrarily decide whether deals are accepted or rejected. It’s such a perverse system.

Alabama has reached a new seven-year contract with football coach Kalen DeBoer that will pay him $12.5 million per season, the university announced Wednesday. spr.ly/6011BBD2EN

Texas Tech GM told me NIL and revenue sharing have changed everything and because of that, every college athlete should have an agent. There are bad agents out there… But there are a lot of good ones too. For most players, it makes a real difference. ⬇️ @USAT

Exactly.👇 In order for multi-yr college athlete contracts to be more common (and for buyouts to be effective), schools must offer them. Schools usually don’t offer them, because they don’t want to be stuck with a player that doesn’t perform well. Want to be able to move on.
Ralph D. Russo@ralphDrussoATH

Not going to dive deep into "college sports is broken" twitter today, but one small contribution. When we asked around about multiyear contracts for athletes often what we heard from coaches and admins was, essentially: "If the kid can't play we'd be stuck with him."
