Eventually this pride I felt in both my Revolutionary War heritage and my Confederate Heritage crashed against official United States public school history. This was a very confusing time in my life. I lived during the Vietnam War. My cousins came by to visit my grandmother in uniform before deployment. I rode my bicycle to Donaldson Air Base to watch F4 Phantoms take off and land, and I loved it. I built scale models of Phantoms and P-40 Warhawks. I watched TV shows like "12 O'Clock High," and loved movies about WWII.
So why was the Battle Flag such a common sight? It covered the infields of NASCAR races, and was a feature at every gift shop from Myrtle Beach to Pigeon Forge. Why did we in the South continue to celebrate our part in the "Civil War."
I admit that, for a time, I gave in to shame for my ancestors who "fought a rebellion against the United States in order to preserve slavery." It felt to me, it was seemingly being drilled into me, that I had to pick one or the other. One side of my heritage was at war with the other. The choice I made was to study other historical subjects, and ignore these altogether.
But eventually I got right back to this point.

A number of descendants of the Founders served in the Confederate Army. To give but a few examples:
Robert E. Lee & his sons and nephews: Gen. Lee was the son of Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee III, and his wife, a Custis was George Washington's step-great-granddaughter
Thomas Jefferson Randolph: A Confederate colonel, he was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Several of Jefferson's other grandchildren served in the Confederate Army, but Randolph was the most prominent
John Augustine Washington III: A Confederate officer, John was last Washington to own Mount Vernon and was the great-grandson of George Washington’s brother John
John Tyler's Family: President John Tyler's sons and grandsons fought for the Confederacy. President Tyler's father had been a prominent patriot during the Revolution
Col. Benjamin Harrison & Lt. Col. Archibald Irwin Harrison, both of these Confederate officers were grandsons of Benjamin Harrison V, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and owner of the famous Berkley Hundred plantation

I respectfully suggest reading Professor Thomas DiLorenzo’s book The Real Lincoln. He’s also given several talks on it that you can find on YouTube. Also @WanjiruNjoya does great work. And look up the speeches and talks given by the late great @HKEdgerton.

Dear Kentucky, You are a wonderful state, blessed by God Almighty with some of the prettiest scenery around. A state full of wonderful people. A state that I’ve spent more time in than any other state besides Tennessee (which is saying something for a rambler like me.) From Pikeville, to Pendleton, and on to Paducah… the Bluegrass state is an entire category unto its own. Parts of it are pure Appalachia. Parts of it are plateau. Parts of it are basically the Midwest. All of that is wonderful and fine and great, use whatever adjective you want to. I love and respect all of those things, but the one thing Kentucky is not is Southern, geographically or culturally.
