/8, Our findings show that neocortex contributes to sex-specific, energy-saving adaptations during metabolic challenge. Thanks to: @RochefortLab (host lab), @KatsanevakiD (in vivo exps), Patricia Maeso (cellular assays), @osterlab, @ManuelaRizzi, @SangSeoUOE (RNAseq).

/7 Our findings are consistent with a growing body of literature showing that “females have evolved more efficient mechanisms than males to conserve energy and resist loss of energy stores...in times of food scarcity or prolonged exercise” (doi.org/10.1038/s41581…)

/1 Our latest @eLife paper is out (doi.org/10.7554/eLife.…) with @RochefortLab, @osterlab, @KatsanevakiD, and others. We show that cortical function and energy usage in female mice are more resilient to food restriction than in male mice. @IMS_MRL @EdinburghUni

/6 Notably, we did not have the statistical power to detect small effect sizes in females, so we cannot definitively say that food restriction had NO effect in females. What we can say, however, is that the effects of food restriction were more statistically robust in males.

/5 In vivo 2-photon ATP and calcium imaging revealed no significant changes in visual cortical energy use or visual coding (i.e. orientation selectivity) in food-restricted females, in contrast to males.

First lab research paper! We explored insula's activity patterns (the infamous "manifold"). We found very consistent manifold structure and dynamics, allowing decoding across different mice and different motivations. Check it out, feedback welcome! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
