There is growing evidence that the Russians continue to provide the Iranian regime with intelligence support. This is clearly destructive activity, and it must be stopped, as it only leads to further destabilization. All decent states are interested in guaranteeing security and preventing a larger crisis. Markets are already reacting negatively, and this is significantly complicating the fuel situation in many countries. By helping the Iranian regime stay afloat and strike more accurately, Russia is effectively prolonging the war. There must be a response.

Trump on Iran: We are dealing with a man who I believe is the most respected and the leader. It is not the Supreme Leader; nobody has heard from him, and we don’t know if he is living.

The situation in Iran, following Israel’s killing of Ali Larijani, has begun to unfold according to the worst-case scenario for the outside world: instead of a possible weakening of the regime, it has noticeably hardened. The de facto center of power has become Saeed Jalili — one of the most radical representatives of the Iranian establishment. He is a politician for whom any compromise with the West is fundamentally impossible: he has consistently opposed all negotiations, insisted on maximum uranium enrichment, and supports a harsh domestic repressive line, as well as a strategic alliance with Russia and China. The key point is that he took power after the killing of Ali Larijani, who, despite his cynicism and lust for power, was considered a pragmatist. Larijani was a rare figure within the system: educated, rational, capable of negotiations and — most importantly — compromise. He was someone it was possible to talk to, and this was recognized in the West. Ostalsky writes that his killing effectively means that one of the few “rational” players has been removed from Iran’s elite, the window for negotiations has narrowed even further, and the most dogmatic and uncompromising forces within the system have grown stronger. Israeli strikes, which were supposed to weaken the system and push it toward compromise, have produced the opposite effect: instead of a pragmatist, a hardliner has taken the helm. In strategic terms, this means the following: a negotiated solution becomes even less likely; confrontation will intensify; and within Iran, the line of a “resistance economy” and suppression of dissent will strengthen. The main paradox of the situation is that by eliminating a figure with whom it was at least theoretically possible to negotiate, Israel has contributed to strengthening the most hardline faction of the regime.
