A Florida Tech-led global analysis of coral bleaching reveals that reefs in the Coral Triangle were exposed to the weakest marine heatwaves over the past two decades and may function as safe havens for corals exposed to elevated seawater temperatures. news.fit.edu/academics-rese…

CORAL REEF NEWS REPORT: In A Hotter Future, What Happens After Coral Reefs Die ndtv.com/world-news/in-… The fate of coral reefs has been written with a degree of certainty rare in climate science: at 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming, most are expected to die. This is not a far-off scenario. Scientists predict that the rise of 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) will be reached within a decade and that beyond that point, many corals simply cannot survive. It is important to accept this and ask what next "rather than trying to hold onto the past", said David Obura, chair of IPBES, the UN's expert scientific panel on biodiversity. #coralreefs #coralreefecology #climatechange #globalwarming #coral #coralbleaching #tropicalmarineecology #marinescience #marinebiology

New comment in @NatureClimate. "This is not a call for inaction. We must act - with haste. But popular urgency should not prioritize technological and scientific feasibility over climate action and evidence-driven care for social-ecological systems." doi.org/10.1038/s41558…
