@MattLoveless 😂😂 also a good point. There were students in the audience nodding & understanding the advice & there were those dismissing it. Those with the willingness to understand the change happening will thrive. By that standard I think this very much hits the commencement speech mark

@ZachKerker That’s a fair argument. I suspect many of them were taking Fireball shots on an arena big screen moments later, so perhaps my expectations of decorum are too high.

Mark down spring 2026 as the time graduation speeches went from “follow your dreams” to “you aren’t particularly useful anymore… shut up idiots.”

@MattLoveless I would argue that those booing someone who’s sharing what impacts he’s seeing in real time, in real world situations, are the ones being dismissive and condescending.

@ZachKerker It’s not what he starts saying, but the dismissive way he (and other commencement speakers I’ve seen) addresses the reaction to it is oddly condescending, considering the setting & its tradition.

Reminiscing a bit. Throwing it back to my first job out of college in Springfield, Illinois with @Channel1450com. An invaluable experience being able to learn the digital media game, get in front of the camera, on the microphone, do some creative storytelling, while also hosting some radio shows. @ZachKerker I’m from Payson graduated late 80’s. I think u and I share a strong disdain for that building. Best officiating I saw there was Ric flair vs Harley Race for the NWA title in 1982.

It doesn’t have to be. A little common sense could begin to restore the decades of legacy that have been toppled in recent years.

@Golfndirtracin Maybe. I have an opinion about why QNDs gym is only half full but I’m probably ruffling enough feathers today already 😅 Agree fully with you on your evaluation of current city format and relation to lower turnout.

@ZachKerker Zach it also seems hoops in general just doesn’t draw like it used to. I watched a few minutes of QND on YouTube Friday night and the pit was maybe half full. And they are unbeaten. That place was always packed in the days gone by. Weather was not a factor Friday.

@SHS_TFXC Help me see the positives that arent outweighed by the fact that the stands are barren in the new format? Any kid will tell you that the reason city was so fun was the environment. The current environment is a shell of what it once was. Even if SHS students still show up

@ZachKerker I agree that the old format was much better, but this new format does have its positives as well. If attendance is the only measurement of success, then I can see why people would consider it a failure.

@SHS_TFXC Yes exactly. The moment this change was made was the moment overall participation and excitement about City Tournament tanked. Everyone has their ulterior motives for why it had to be done. But the truth is, it dramatically altered the turnout for the city’s crowned jewel event.

@ZachKerker I do agree that alternating girls/boys through the night is not ideal.

@SHS_TFXC Maybe I only want to see girls or only want to see boys, but the late afternoon game doesn’t work for me. Past life, eat dinner somewhere, come for 2 games. Tight schedule. $20 in concessions. Tremendous entertainment. (Fans more than teams sometimes!).

@ZachKerker Would like to hear your thoughts on why SHS attendance has remained steady, but the attendance of the other 3 schools has declined drastically. Change in format has not deterred our kids from showing up. Especially on Friday and Saturday.

@SHS_TFXC If I’m a Lanphier fan, maybe I have to show up for late afternoon game, then potentially hang around for 2 other games before the other Lanphier team plays. No wonder you gotta spend $100 on concessions while you’re there. You’re there 7-8 hours.

@SHS_TFXC I respectfully disagree that $8 or $32 for entry is the problem. Most coming stopped to get $8 Starbucks on the way. I understand the cost of security. Ironically, reducing your gate by changing format hasn’t helped cover those costs. 5-7k on Sat was normal, even in 3 degree wx

@ZachKerker I agree there. I get why it changed, but another barrier is $8 a ticket. If you go all nights with a family of 4 you spend $128 not including the insane concession prices. Even the 1 night we went we spent almost $100 on entry and concessions.

@SHS_TFXC Would be ignoring the cause that led us here in the first place. All changed when the format changed.

@ZachKerker I do think at some point in the future the first two nights will rotate around the 3 city schools. Friday and Saturday still at the BOS. But I could see that.

@Spoony1981 Or… or. They should just go back to the format that filled each of the gyms for each of the 2 respective tournaments.

@ZachKerker With the nice new big gyms in town. Maybe they should put them to use and try to fill them. Rotate it every year

I’m old enough to remember when people actually went to City Tournament. Shouldn’t have tried to fix what wasn’t broken.
