Just spoke to a civil engineering expert. The #Keybridge was a three-span, continuous steel truss bridge. Support was spread out evenly along the three piers. This is a common, efficient design. The bridge "couldn’t have been expected to withstand" losing a pier, she said.

The collapse also comes 2 days after the bridge's 47-year anniversary and 1 day after Maryland Day. In addition to the immediate tragedy, the loss of the span will also certainly have lingering impacts on traffic flow through the region and in the harbor. 3/3
