@MrZachG Again, I'm not even disagreeing with you but you are making my point. Your the question is sort of a trap. You lean/strongly believe in DI which is why the question is worded that way. I'm a proponent of the research but an all or nothing discussion isn't productive.

@ZachRBrain I don’t lean towards scripts and textbooks, I lean towards whatever will work regardless of how it “looks”. The DI programs (as the most researched example) on average are going to give you a lot of learning and they use scripts and workbooks. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.310…

If you could erase the achievement gap between disadvantaged and advantaged students and rocket your country's education system to the very top of the international leaderboards on every metric, but you had to teach from a script and use textbooks, would you take the trade?

@MrZachG I'm not trying to get into an argument but I'm guessing it's because you lean towards scripts/textbooks (well aware it's not that simple)..

@MrZachG It is a good discussion but I don't think it is a fair question. There's a reason it wasn't worded, "If you could erase the achievement gap between disadvantaged and advantaged....but you had to create your own lessons and find your own resources, would you trade?

@ZachRBrain Asking directly collects information on personal preferences. This poll, while intended for fun and discussion, somewhat rules that out by saying excellent results are a given.

@MrZachG Ok. The reason I ask is that I don't think this actually "measures" discomfort.

@ZachRBrain There is no such insinuation, but I am curious to measure discomfort with structured aka canned materials.

Grade 6's turn as they take it to the next level with rectangular, triangular, and trapezoidal prisms.

Westboro Academy grade 5 creating dice from recycled wood. Overheard comments: "Do we sand all twelve edges?" "The vertices are sharp." "If we sand it, will they still be right angels?" "I love making my own manipulatives." @howie_hua @IsabRacine #mathisfun #math #geometry

Grade 5 and 6 students at Westboro Academy had some amazing "Aha!" moments this week discovering and exploring the Triangle Sum Theorem.

@BenisonMrs @MrZachG Saying these lessons do little for most kids is unfair. I don't have a "side" in this argument but I know from personal experience in teaching in a variety of schools that most kids actually do benefit from these lessons if done correctly.

Yup!!! All these practices are particularly detrimental for kids who are not proficient readers or writers. We need to stop teaching kids as if they were already proficient readers and writers.Kids aren't mini-adults. We adults might enjoy them but they do little for most kids

We focused so much on getting to 1:1 we forgot the benefits of sharing a device. Try this from time to time.

If you want to blow your students' minds and have them totally engaged in an assessment, surprise them with a 'Test in a Bag'. Grade six student, "I can't believe I'm excited and nerding out over a test!" #math #geometry #thinkoutsidethebag@howie_hua⁩ ⁦

Excited to lead a workshop this spring at #OAME2023 Printer jammed and WiFi down? Teaching Math With What You Have. Today was a good example of grabbing what was available to teach geometry. Grade 5 students were engaged for the entire hour.
