I think there is a misconception about Austin Riley, and yes, before I get started, he has been bad this season, you could say awful, but the notion he is this bad, or has been very bad for multiple years at this point, is disingenuous: 2024 - He got off to a really slow start, but the three months prior to injury, and the Angels breaking his hand – from June 1 to August 31st, he had a 138 wRC+ and was worth 2.3 fWAR in 286 PA. To act as if he was bad is just completely disingenuous. 2025 - OK, We know he was dealing with nagging injuries, and was on and off the IL, but before we were aware of the hernia situation – he had a 118 wRC+ for April and May. Not old MVP production but when again you factor in him playing through injury, etc. it makes plenty of sense for production to go down. 2026 - Yes, absolutely has been bad, but Riley is not this bad of a player. You cannot convince me otherwise that there is not some sort of nagging injury post surgery, and yes, there is absolutely approach and mechanical issues – but again, Austin Riley is not a 80 wRC+ player. They paid Charlie Morton 20 million a year for multiple years at the tail end of his career. Paying Austin Riley 2 million more is not crippling the franchise by any stretch of the imagination. If it this time next year when he has been a year removed from anymore surgery, than yes, I will agree the contract is dead in the water, but to me he has earned the right to be given grace, just like Ozzie and Mike were last year.
