"We never *didn't* know this history" Thoroughly enjoyed listening to yesterday's powerful panel of historians and educators from the New Paltz community; discussing their research and public engagement with #HudsonValley slavery to a packed house! #PublicHistory

Crisp spring evening down Huguenot Street 🌸🏡 10 generations ago, my ancestors - "refugees from France" - founded New Paltz, bringing with them the first enslaved people of African descent too This family history, and the work of peers like @HuguenotStreet, drive my research

@ZacharyVeith If you're NOT reading John Burroughs because we gave you his gravesite as your park, please never tell us.

If I were to name the three most precious resources of life, I should say books, friends, and nature; and the greatest of these, at least the most constant and always at hand, is nature." - John Burroughs, "The Art of Seeing Things" (1908) 📚🌿

#Easter is a time for bunnies, eggs ... and gnomes?? 🌷🐰 Cards from the turn-of-the-century, with egg-headed kids, show the Edwardian's surreal sense of humor, while rabbits drive automobiles to show new innovations or don uniforms to hint at the looming threat of war in Europe

As early as 1690, Robert Livingston, 1st Lord of Livingston Manor, invested in the slaving vessel "Margriet" His son, Philip Livingston, 2nd Lord of the Manor - one of NY's leading slave importers - would invest in over 400 slaving vessels #NorthernSlavery #NewYorkEnslavers

Once human property, now a property-owner: the 1891 location of Robert St. John's house, along the border of Rhinebeck and Hyde Park! 🏡 You'll notice the name Hasbrouck - likely, George Hasbrouck; a fellow Black resident of Staatsburg and witness to St. John's 1893 wedding ⬇️

Spent all day fleshing-out this brief marriage record for Robert St. John (a self-emancipated person from Brazil) and Eliza Johnson from 1893 Were they married at the Maple Wood Hotel - and not at St. Margaret's Church - out of prejudice? Personal connection? LOT left to unpack
