Alright, time to weigh in on the Tolkienian canon debate. Tolkien’s stories were almost always works in progress, which is why we have so many drafts of his work, some of which differ very significantly from what is published. When Christopher published The Silmarillion (and beyond), he did his best to piece together his father’s various drafts. One can truly say that Tolkien wrote The Silmarillion, but that is not to say with certainty that the version we have is exactly what he would have published. Until his death, he continued to develop and discover this world. Furthermore, even Tolkien’s published works were not finalized, which is why he was okay with revising The Hobbit and working the retcon into the story of LotR. He even began another revision of The Hobbit to make the tone more in line with LotR. He abandoned this, but the fact that he started it at all demonstrates that he even some fluidity even in his published stories. In conclusion, I do not believe we can use the term “canon” with Tolkien’s corpus, even if we can (and should) argue that some things are more authoritative than others. The most fitting term here is “legendarium.” Tolkien provided us with a mythos that, in this respect, is similar to the other great myths and legends, which have various takes on similar stories. The only difference is that Tolkien, by himself, produced the collected wisdom that generally requires a people across time.

Andy, you should look into this before you comment. He was only subject to such a burden of proof because HE BROUGHT A CIVIL SUIT AGAINST HIS ACCUSERS. He accused people of defaming him, which then forced a judge to make a finding on whether or not the claims were more likely to be true or false. He is now being prosecuted criminally and will be subject to the higher standard of proof.
