Africa Day in South Africa while xenophobic attacks on fellow Africans continue is not a celebration, it is a performance. You cannot fly the flag and sing the anthem while burning a Malawian's shop or stabbing a Zimbabwean's son. The same people waving "Africa Unite" posters today will be telling "foreigners to go home" tomorrow morning. Until South Africans treat every African from Lagos to Mogadishu as a brother and not a competitor, Africa Day is just cosplay. Unity is not a hashtag. It is a neighbour who looks different but eats the same sadza, speaks a different tongue but wants the same peace. If you cannot love the African standing next to you, do not post about the African continent. I am trying to go soon, but I had to say this first. Happy Africa Day to those who actually mean it.
