I am already sick of ppl pronouncing it wrong . It's very simple Maker (as in make stuff) Field. I was born there. Maykerfeeld. If that helps. It's where Orwell saw unemployed coal miners scavenging for coal in the 30s ... a proud, brilliant community.

@aedmans Yep!….Ofwat Ofgen etc have ruled with a ‘rod of iron’, ensuring that we don’t have to contend with poor service, appalling quality standards and extortionate pricing. We are truly indebted to these stout guardians

Andy Burnham is completely wrong to say that Thatcher deregulated water, gas, and electricity. She privatised them – and simultaneously regulated them by creating Ofwat, Ofgas, and Offer. Regulation goes hand-in-hand with privatisation to ensure that utilities don't abuse monopoly power. If utilities are not maximising societal welfare, the solution is stronger regulation, not re-nationalisation.
Tory Fibs@ToryFibs

Andy Burnham: “I don’t blame anyone who left our party. I don’t blame anyone who voted for other parties”. “We need to renationalise water, energy and housing.”

@annettedittert Should never have left, but having done so, I’m not sure that going back (on what would almost certainly be worse terms) will necessarily be practical. In any event the EU dare not risk the massive upheaval of readmitting us, only for us to leave again at the next election !

It’s slightly frustrating that this is still not considered a two way street. Brussels might not want to touch us with a barge pole as long as Farage is lingering in the background. I obv welcome Brexit seems no longer a taboo, but we need more honesty and clarity here.
Alex Wickham@alexwickham

Both Andy Burnham and now Wes Streeting have called for the UK to rejoin the EU Burnham at conference last year: “I want to rejoin the EU.” Streeting today says the same It could be a controversial policy in the Makerfield by-election. It voted 65% Leave in 2016

Is the benefits system too generous? JCB chairman Lord Bamford has warned Britain "can’t get away" with people receiving up to £60,000 a year in benefits, saying soaring welfare costs risk a public ‘revolt’. Is he right? Is the benefits system out of control?

@jack_utft Oh yeah …”he always enjoyed visiting Wigan for the football” We have played Southampton at Latics all of TWICE in our history…2013 and 2018 ..both long after Southampton fired this guy off as a Director. I wonder if he’s just a patronising liar?

Less than 24 hours in and we are being told by people who dont know the area makerfield is an affluent area with little immigration or serious problems and burnham is well liked. Its insane how wrong they are. Can't wait for the boots on the ground of the national press.

@DuxVul @atticusfinch104 Have you been to Culcheth ? I have, it’s OK but no one who lives there describes it as ‘leafy Cheshire’ (it was Lancashire anyway before the reorg) He went to Cambridge via state school not because he went to Eton or Harrow ‘Elite’ my arse

@faz42 @WAFCRob Faz, I’ve seen the House of Commons letter to Burnham (he published it online a few years back) from Grant Shapps stating that if Grtr Mcr didn’t apply the CAZ …they would be denied Govt funding to which they were otherwise due.

@RupertLowe10 You “always enjoyed visiting Wigan for the football” Oh of course you did, after all Southampton have been to Wigan twice …ever Both games long after you’d been turfed out of Southampton FC as a Director. I’m not saying you’re a disingenuous toe rag, but you sound like one
