We are not just desensitized to the fungibility of Black men, but conditioned to desire it. You will read Black feminists like Beth Richie claim that Black women’s social realities are shaped by the constant threat of “male violence,” while we get virtually no consideration outside of Black Male Studies about how Black males’ realities are shaped by the constant threat of death by state and vigilante forces. And you have so many in our community who believe Black men should be policed this way and actively demand it. The reality is violent crime has been consistently declining for 3 decades. The best measures to prevent youth crime are stable housing, employment, recreation, and genuine investment. Black people need to come together as a people and prioritize this issue. As a collective, we could solve it. But our disdain for Black males, primarily facilitated by intersectional academics, pundits, and activists, is a major inhibitor to doing so.
