Despite the leaks taking a lot of the oomph out of this reveal, I'm just so happy that this is what they're going with. Nothing crazy, just a bigger, better Switch. Perfect.

@FlorentChif @Carter_Kakos I think I misinterpreted your original comment then, my bad! In particular, I disagreed with the take that "Nintendo only addressed the timeline due to fan pressure and as a marketing strategy to sell books."
Overall, I largely agree with your perspective on things!

So, after watching the video, I think you got me wrong, as what I say does not go against what you explain.
I appreciate your perspective, Zeltik, and I understand where you’re coming from, especially regarding how Nintendo occasionally hinted at chronological connections in manuals and promotional material. However, while it’s true that the developers might have had a loose sense of how certain games were connected, it’s worth questioning the degree of intentionality behind those connections. The games themselves weren’t designed with a rigid timeline in mind; instead, the connections were broad and symbolic rather than detailed and logical. That's partly why I say it does not matter.
The early Zelda games focused on gameplay and mythological storytelling, using recurring motifs to evoke a sense of continuity without being constrained by a strict narrative structure. What we now call 'the timeline' feels more like a post-hoc justification—a way to satisfy fans’ desire for structure rather than something foundational to the series’ design. This is especially evident with games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which disregard established timeline logic entirely. Nintendo’s priority seems to remain creating standalone, compelling experiences rather than adhering to a strict chronological order.
I respect your research and love for the series, but I believe the timeline debate leaves room for interpretation. You even mention that the lore seems malleable—and that’s precisely my point. To me, the symbolic storytelling and thematic resonance of the games are far more meaningful than a rigid timeline could ever be.
And you know what? I’m 35 years old and have been playing Zelda since I was 4. In 31 years, this debate has been one of the main topics among fans. Here we are, nearly in 2025, and you’ve made a video about it; we’re debating it, and people still don’t agree. I think Nintendo likes it this way.

@FlorentChif @Carter_Kakos This is completely wrong- if you had watched the video before replying, you'd know that the developers have always had an idea of how the games are connected chronologically. You can of course have your own opinion on whether this is good or bad, but it is absolutely the case.
English

Not really. The Legend of Zelda was initially built to be symbolic, rooted in myth and archetype rather than rigid logic. Nintendo only addressed the timeline due to fan pressure and as a marketing strategy to sell books. While some fans feel the timeline enhances their experience, it often serves to fulfill a need for structure rather than deepening the artistry. The downside is that by forcing logic onto something symbolic, the narrative loses its archetypal depth. This symbolic loss may not be consciously noticed by fans, but it subtly impacts the game's ability to evoke universal meaning.
Moreover, we can see how the timeline itself doesn’t make sense when we examine recent games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. So many elements in these games are impossible to reconcile within any timeline framework. Even before these games, Nintendo resorted to 'splitting' the timeline into parallel universes to make sense of it all. This, in itself, shows how contrived and nonsensical the whole idea of a timeline really is.

Nintendo have posted an update to the Zelda Timeline on their website, placing Echoes of Wisdom in the Downfall Timeline branch, between Tri Force Heroes and Zelda 1.

Zelda stories being created late in development =/= Zelda stories are unimportant or bad.
If that's your opinion you need to play more Zelda games

Zelda stories are created AFTER the game design. Eiji Aonuma tells me why he has never written a story first before designing a game
