This fandom is so racist why are yall so adamant a character drawn Asian and has a Chinese last name is… white? I’ve never seen a fandom THIS in denial that a character is almost certainly Asian??

@riverlethes I guess I’m more referring to overall her changes to decision making being more wise and logical vs the more childish ones in book 1, such as the detour to the Arch just because she wanted to. I’m mostly reacting to the fandom talking about her botl characterization though.

@Zeph_rAO3 I have to disagree with you there I don’t see that at all, just that some of the more childish aspects don’t translate to screen and they lean more into her being an adultified child soldier . She always seems perfectly emotional to me for the circumstances

People really gotta sit down and think about how they talk about show Annabeth. There’s a very uncomfortable message being sent by both the writing team and fans who demand Annabeth’s stoicism and maturity beyond her age. “She wouldn’t be petty toward Rachel, she’s wise”
cat 🏹@riverlethes

i think sometimes people talk about annabeth in a way that makes it seem like they want her to be an entirely different character . she’s not a shoot first ask questions later girlboss and nor is she a pushover who you can project your own romantic trials on to. she does not

@riverlethes I hope they let her be more emotional and immature. She’s been stripped of a lot of the little whimsies that she had in the books and I’m not a fan of that. Fingers crossed they shift toward allowing a young teenage girl to be a young teenage girl.

@Zeph_rAO3 I agree but I don’t think anything in the writing indicates that, just that it’ll be handled with more grace than the books

@brnacctxo @dorris_ndlovu Like ffs book fans never had this conversation because the white girl was allowed to be a young kid, but fans and the writers seem to believe the black girl has to be mature and unemotional for “some reason.”

@brnacctxo @dorris_ndlovu Haven’t heard a soul talk about this until you, and I think it should be extended to Annabeth’s writing too. Why is she being written so stoic and mature? And people saying her botl behavior is “immature and unlike her” just sounds like “she’s so mature for her age”

Book fans never had this conversation over Annabeth, so I wonder why show fans are demanding such a high standard for a 14 year old girl.

Sounds so much like “she’s so mature for her age” and also policing a black girl’s emotions and criticizing her for being, yknow, a 14 year old girl with a a crush? She absolutely is immature and emotional and prideful and stubborn, that’s Annabeth, that’s how kids work.

@fohead2big @refiloe_unknown And even then, Athena’s entire reason for supporting it was because it would be strategically unwise to not address the issue that caused the war in the first place. They’re still so divorced from mortal concepts of family and filial duty. It took Apollo becoming mortal to get it

@Zeph_rAO3 @refiloe_unknown which is exactly my point 😭 the gods not taking care of their kids has more to do with their morals than any law. And that is shown towards the end of TLO when Percy forces the Gods to acknowledge their kids

@refiloe_unknown Interpreted the “Annabeth should’ve been black from the get-go” as referring to the show casting, since that’s the adaptation where she is black.

if Percy and Annabeth’s love story is like a modern Perseus and Andromeda love story, and Andromeda was Ethiopian…. Annabeth should’ve been black from the get-go

@fohead2big @refiloe_unknown Fuck, they AREN’T God. As in the capital G benevolent deity that loves unconditionally. It’s hard to divorce from christocentric concepts of divinity but it’s important to recognize that God is an allegorical Father, as opposed to the gods which are forces of nature.

@fohead2big @refiloe_unknown I can’t remember if it’s cosmic law, Zeus’ law, or just a general status quo that keeps them from intervening, but it is certainly not entirely in their control. You also gotta remember these are God, they’re gods. Capricious, selfish, pinnacles of human vice and virtue.

@fohead2big @refiloe_unknown People, they’re Something Else, and that difference is what drives 99% of the conflict in the series. Luke is seduced by Kronos because he plays to Luke’s bitterness at his father’s absence and neglect.

@fohead2big @refiloe_unknown They aren’t benevolent and all loving, they’re vengeful and willful and at times cruel and wrathful. We can’t judge them with human morals because they’re so far removed from what we can conceive in terms of power. That doesn’t mean they’re beyond reproach, but the gods aren’t-
