Lovely impromptu philosophical chat this evening with a construction worker. Went to buy water at a roadside snoopie; he was getting an after-work drink. He asks if I work at the UN (nearby), I say no, sorry. We both return to our own business. And then I think, wait, but why?

I don’t think there’s been a time in my life when the world felt better primed to be reminded why we need journalism. Proper journalism. Independent, ruthless, courageous storytelling. We are not going to survive this *gestures at… everything* without it.

🚨 Big win for democracy! A German court has ordered X to hand over election data after researchers flagged possible voter manipulation. 2024 saw the highest rates of election misinformation ever recorded. This is a crucial step for transparency! More: sa.lrc.org.za/4gy0oA7

[THREAD] The vast majority of @USAID money spent in SA goes to civil society, research groups and to 'health systems support' of government projects. See a detailed breakdown here: foreignassistance.gov/cd/south%20afr…

If you’re trying to understand what’s happening in Goma, I highly recommend this week’s issue of @thecontinent_ . It’s free to access via WhatsApp and it’s the most comprehensive weekly newspaper on matters Africa.

This is an effect of the USAID stop work order. Not the cause of it.

By virtue of being human, EVERYONE has the right to: - life - equality - human dignity Life & human dignity are sacrosanct & are ENTIRELY non-derogable. The right to equality is non-derogable wrt unfair discrimination based on race, colour, origin, sex, religion or language. ✌🏾

My favourite is “adventurers”. Like our ancestors were just out for a stroll to document different kinds of trees... ‘Oops! I commandeered a country! Oh well, the sunshine is nicer here than back home. Might as well stay…. Guess we’ll need to install our own government then.’

History was written in a way that totally downplays Europe’s crimes. The way colonisers are referred to as “settlers” is one example. Very peaceful word, for a ruthless group of people.

I don’t envy friends in the States right now - it must be unbearable and seem impossible. I just wanted to share that it had me, once again, reflecting on how incredible South Africa is, and how most South Africans are relentless in the quest for real change.

It made me reflect on South Africa, and how, despite often it feels like the ‘summit of one mountain is the base of another’, we don’t stop. While there are people who believe, we will not give up. No matter how many Onion-worthy headlines we wake up to. We can’t let up.

I asked some friends in the USA recently why it feels from the outside like there’s no pushback. No fight. They said one possibility is that folks are still shattered from the last Trump administration, and it feels a bit like everything was left on the line, nothing achieved.
