Career update: Alongside maintaining a presence in freelance journalism (a few eagle-eyed readers noticed my first article for Red Bull Gaming last month), I am also stepping into a Director of Communications and Brand Development position with @playnewmeta’s new team. To celebrate, I’m spending my Friday at the @violetsimon_ Disruptors Festival for discussions about women in leadership, navigating opportunity, and utilising femininity for positive change! Looking forward to doing some good things, and thankful for the incredible support I continue to receive as I keep navigating my way through the esports, gaming, and tech industries 🙏🏻

I’ve been thinking about this since last week. The esports industry is often defined by the biggest organisations, million-dollar tournaments, and or international rosters. But when I look I see a lot more at the grassroots level. There is an overwhelming amount of raw talent and genuine passion within esports that goes largely unrecognised. Players, coaches, artists , and creators and more are putting in countless hours simply because they believe in the space. It’s something you don’t fully understand until you see it firsthand. At the same time, we’ve seen instability at the top. Organisations like FaZe Clan have faced well-documented financial struggles, while others such as TSM have stepped back from major competitive scenes, including dissolving or reworking international rosters. These moments highlight a key issue: the top-heavy structure of esports is fragile. Events like DreamHack show both sides of the industry, bring together some of the best talent and biggest brands in the uk .But it’s also reveals just how much of the scene is powered by smaller communities, independent organisers, and individuals. What we are starting to see now is a shift. As larger organisations struggle to sustain themselves, the importance of grassroots esports is becoming more obvious. This is true in the UK, where the grassroots scene is full of potential but lacks consistent infrastructure and investment. Despite this, there are still passionate people building communities and creating opportunities from the ground up. The issue isn’t the absence of talent or effort. It’s the lack of collective support. If esports is going to grow sustainably, it cannot rely solely on major organisations or international investment. The responsibility also lies with us: players, fans, organisers, and industry professionals. Supporting local events, engaging with smaller communities, and investing time into grassroots initiatives is what will actually build a long-term ecosystem and a strong foundation for larger scale initiatives. You can’t build a house without a found.

First ever game expo and what an experience! DreamHack opened my eyes to how much untapped talent there is in esports. Now that it’s wrapped up, it’s back to work. Dreams are only as good as the work you put into them, and I’m ready to do the work. Big thanks to @hannahmariezt for introducing me to so many talented people, my true guardian angel 🙏.Looking forward to building and collaborating in the future.
