Eid Mubarak to all! 🌙 Aside from the ritual sacrifice part, I always loved Eid growing up — and still do. But a lot of religious-rooted holidays are based on bizarre myths — from Easter (based on the torture, crucifixion, and then zombification of Christ); to Passover (based on God genocidally killing the firstborn child of every Egyptian with the plague but “passing over” the Israelites who put lamb’s blood on their doors); to Eid al Adha, based on a key origin story of all the Abrahamic monotheisms: Abraham has a dream where God speaks to him and commands him to kill his firstborn son. Abraham heads out and tells Isaac (or Ismail for Muslims) to come with. When Abraham is about to kill the kid, at the last minute God sends down the ultimate “LOL-just-kidding!” miracle — the child is replaced with a goat (or sheep, I’m not totally clear on this). I always wondered if that’s why human children are called “kids.” This incident, by the way, is also thought to be where male newborn circumcision originated. God spared the child’s big head for the littler one. Now I’m not sure why this story is so seminally foundational to three major religions — a seemingly insecure God testing the undying loyalty of his subject by asking him to kill his child sounds more like two of my three ex-wives than the Creator of the Patriarch of the Great Monotheisms. But hey, mysterious ways, baby. The fun part of all of this is you can secularize these holidays and really enjoy them however you want to. Passover is delicious, Easter is now all about bunnies and eggs, and Eid al Adha is about dressing up and getting lots of money (if you’re a kid). Very few know the real, violent, and borderline-psychosis-laced history of these rituals, and that’s a huge sign of progress. When we were kids, my brother, the singer-songwriter @zameermusic, was traumatized when we went out and got two goats, which he befriended and loved playing with for several days, only to watch them slaughtered in the backyard on the Holy Day, with all the kids in attendance.
