WCW Monday Nitro ends after five and a half years on TNT. Vince McMahon announces on WWF Raw that he has bought WCW. In a once in a lifetime television event Raw and WCW Nitro are simulcast with both shows airing on each other's broadcast. In a storyline midway through the broadcast Vince’s son Shane comes out on WCW Monday Nitro to announce that he was the one who signed the contract. The Final WCW Monday Nitro Main Event sees Ric Flair and Sting take on each other for the last time.

I remember the day WWE purchased WCW very well. This was back in my hotline days and not only did I have my own hotline where I discussed opinions, I would often call other hotlines that reported news. One of my go-to hotlines was a news report hosted by a guy who I think was named Bret Schwan but I don’t recall the name of the actual hotline. During these weeks he would open up each report with the newest names listed for the Gimmick Battle Royal at WM 17. On the day of the purchase, he spent the first 5-10 minutes updating us on the list of names for the battle royal and when he was done he goes “and in other news World Wrestling Federation has purchased World Championship Wrestling” and that was it. 😂 Once I heard this, I logged onto my dial-up Internet (wouldn't get high speed until I moved to the beach 3 months later) to see the news on WWE‘s website. One week out from one of the most anticipated WrestleManias of all-time and we get hit with the biggest bombshell in the industry’s history. It’s impossible to put this into words if you weren’t there to live and breathe it. I was on the WWE side of the war and although part of me was happy that WCW felt the fat bulging wrath of karma rammed up their ass, I knew this was going to change wrestling forever, and that scared me a little. Despite Bischoff’s unbelievably douchey behavior during the Monday Night Wars, WCW still occupied a major part of my wrestling fandom and heart, especially prior to Nitro's debut. There was just something special about 6:05 Saturday wrestling while living in the south. The vibe, the logo, the colors, the announcers, the rings, the way the air smelled coming through the windows on a summer Saturday night while my dad BBQ'd chicken on the grill, all of it. To quote Don Henley, "Those days are gone forever, I should just let them go -" #LongLiveWCW
