(同じ距離。) - I bought the entire blu ray for NGE when it finally came out in the US. - I own every rebuild film multiple times AND I’ve bought and imported your shitty Japanese Blu-Rays for several series. I put my money where my mouth is. Hell, I have bought whole manga series and paid the import costs in the hopes that MAYBE juuuuust maybe, it’ll one day get a crappy online-only release in MY language. (Of which the attached picture is just a sliver of.) So shut up. I pay for my shit as often as I can. I only ever resort to piracy when there has been no other option whatsoever. You get to walk down the road and read your shit for the cost of a cup of coffee. And I’m not even struggling! I live in the US! Imagine how bad it must be for people in Latin American countries! The culture is such that it only takes a few purchases of higher value goods like figures for you to be considered a top 10% dedicated otaku here.

There are few dedicated stores for otaku merch, they might occasionally be included in parts of Western comic stores. Anime conventions are the best bet to find and buy things in person.

Some categories of goods like figures do make it here consistently and reliably, others like dakimakura are sold very infrequently.

Many of us subscribe to Gabe Newell’s view that “piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem” and attribute the ease of buying games on Steam with reduced game piracy.

Pretty much every discussion I saw on social media highlighted that there was no plan to release it after the event. That was what elevated the discussion around it in Western fanbases.
