Open letter to @brian_armstrong and @jessepollak Brian’s post is a silver lining: Base and Coinbase are open to input, and course corrections are possible. 2026 will be a crucial year for Base. Giving feedback now feels necessary for someone who truly loves it. Before I begin: this is written with deep respect and admiration for what you’ve built. Without you two, there is no Coinbase or Base. But as in life and in markets, past success isn’t a guarantee of future success. Over time, blind spots and personal preferences can narrow even the best perspectives. The Coinbase System update event left me with two impressions: 1. Base appears increasingly framed around a creator economy rather than an onchain economy. 2. Base feels under-prioritized inside Coinbase, despite having the potential to be its crown jewel. Many companies can and have built trading products: spot, perps, prediction markets, etc. These are good and useful products and clearly support Coinbase’s mission. But they are not the differentiators. Very few companies, however, can build a successful chain and a thriving onchain economy. That is where Base is uniquely positioned to make the difference. With a potential network token, $BASE could even become a meaningful financial differentiator for Coinbase. The two paths, outlined in the post, ultimately shrink Base. From my perspective, Base should not be only a social/creator economy, and it’s not just a self-custodial version for trading & financial services. Those can and should be important parts of the stack. But they should not be the entire vision. Base should be a whole onchain economy. And that requires a primary focus on builders and onchain startups. Users, traders, and creators follow builders, not the other way around. Builders go where there is real usage, liquidity, trading activity, and economic opportunity. They go where the best products and apps are built, where distribution exists, and where they can best tokenize and finance real products and businesses. The deeper first-principles issue is this: the value of (social) networks isn’t content itself. It’s time and attention. Ads exist not because of content, but because people spend time and attention on a platform. Without time and attention, there is no value. And time and attention are finite, they cannot be scaled. And that’s the risk Base faces today. If too much attention is allocated to the creator/content coin narrative, other parts of the ecosystem are inevitably under-served. Less focus on builders leads to fewer real onchain businesses, fewer meaningful tokens and products, and ultimately fewer users and traders. Base bleeds out. The center of gravity needs to shift back toward the onchain economy as a whole: builders, businesses, ownership coins, and onchain products. I love @Base and want it to succeed. I want to keep contributing to its success. I hope this reads as what it is: respectful, honest feedback meant to help. Respectfully, Base Builder #69
