Today is 11 Cozcacauhtli, or Vulture, in the Mexica calendar, It is ruled by Itzpapalotl. Itzpapalotl is the Obsidian Butterfly, the Lady of the obsidian blade. She strips away the skin and reveals the heart within. From Her, nothing may be hidden. In my painting, She walks forward holding the leg of Tezcatlipoca, lost in the struggle with Cipactli, Our Mother, at the beginning of the world. It remains from that first act of creation, when the earth was opened so life could exist. She is the midwife of humanity. She opens the body to bring us into the world and severs the umbilical cord with her obsidian knife. Today we honor Her by facing what She reveals.
