India ranks 157th out of 180 countries on the World Press Freedom Index. During the ongoing student protests in Delhi (India), the government suspended internet services in the area while protesters were reporting live and sharing images and videos. Meanwhile, most media reporters were siding with the government and weren’t sharing the full story, blaming the students instead of the police. Many students were brutally beaten by the police, misusing their power, which is pathetic totally unacceptable. The worst part? There are countless videos of male police officers beating children and women inappropriately. In this situation, social media platforms like X and Instagram were the only way to know what’s ACTUALLY happening. We need better internet access and better governance. Shutting down communication during protests is unacceptable. Free speech is a joke in this country. Is this even a democracy anymore?
