This is not the first time Dr. would put out something like this. I remb the conversation surrounding Lawyers' charges for the role they play in estate planning & Wills.
I believe we as lawyers should know and acknowledge that Attestation is not a neutral act. When a lawyer witnesses or authenticates a mortgage document or any other document, they're not just confirming that a pen touched paper. They're implicitly lending their professional standing to the authenticity and regularity of that transaction. If something goes wrong (fraud, misrepresentation, a disputed execution) that lawyer's name is in the chain. Courts and parties will look back at who authenticated what. If it ever makes it to the public, the public too will look at who authenticated.
So there is a real risk of integrity and professional regards being shot down.
The logic to what a lawyer charges in this instance is simple. Exposure to risk and it scales with the transaction.
Attesting a ₦5 million mortgage is not the same risk profile as attesting a ₦500 million one. The document value affects what you're putting your name behind.
When one looks at it like this, is it really bad to charge per transaction value?
At the end of the day, professional acts carry professional weight. A lawyer who signs anything "as a matter of course" without appreciating the implications is either being negligent or undervaluing themselves.

My contribution to this professional fee discourse is simple: The practice of law is a business. Do not allow lawyers who are not practicing tell you how to run your practice. If they were smart, strategic and successful enough in the practice of law, they probably would not have abandoned it for something else.

Did one in Ilorin recently. He was charged for armed robbery and attempted culpable homicide (allegedly cut off someone’s left hand). After he was discharged and acquitted, we processed his release from court and he approached me for transport fare to return to his village. I burst into serious laughter😂😂😂😂

The last criminal case wey I handle pro bono, apart from not collecting one naira, they were still calling me from kirikiri for one financial assistance and another. Na as I enter ph I write to my Lord say I don relocate from jurisdiction temporarily, so I no do again😂
