Does this mean the brain dynamically balances internal belief-updating against external evidence to match the environment? Welcome to the SfN nano talk by our wonderful Sylvia Durian Monday morning. This work is supervised by @marlenecohen and @sepalmerNeuro

Using information theoretical approaches designed to capture the statistical dependence of neuronal activity on task parameters, we found: while V1 stably encodes visual features 7a changes how much reward history to consider to infer rule switches under different volatility.

#SfN25 How does the brain adapt according to the volatility of the environment? We recorded from macaque visual (V1) & parietal (7a) cortex when the task rule stochastically changed at low and high rates.

Related, we also have another poster on Wednesday afternoon at Q14 showing that seeing the entire image induces interesting behaviorally relevant modulations of V1 and V4 responses to fragments of the image. Come talk to us at both posters!

#SfN25 How does the primate brain instantly recognize images? Humans can easily remember thousands of images after a single viewing. @GraceDiRisio @marlenecohen and I set out to find the core mechanisms in the visual cortex for this fast, high-capacity coding.

What if after all that you still hear “Knee problems don’t get treated in England. Note: most English people have bendable knees.”? Well, obviously the LLM that produced it needs a consistency check. Fix it.

So now is an opportunity to start doing the obvious. Make Chinese friends. Admit Chinese students. Invite Chinese speakers. It takes courage to go against the current political tide. But true leaders don’t shy away from doing what is right @RosalindPicard @MIT @NeurIPSConf

Scientists are no less vulnerable to biases or fear mongering than the average public. In 1839, even the most knowledgeable scholars in China believed that English people had rigid knees that don’t bend. That myth, of course, broke upon contact.

Remember this habitual offender of racial discrimination. Shame of @MIT 🙃 Hallucination is not a problem of AI, it’s a problem of this group of humans, no? Once we eliminate their corpus from the training set we might solve the hallucination problem:)

@JamesKragel will show that visual content modulates neural oscillations in the hippocampus and amygdala during memory tasks. Eye movements particularly synchronized with theta when viewing people in scenes, suggesting how these neural systems drive memory prioritization.

How does prior semantic knowledge affect visual memory? Using crowdsourced behavioral data and intracranial EEG, @MaxLichtenfeld finds that prior semantic knowledge interacts with task context, modulating medial temporal lobe activity and change detection in a visual memory task.
