For FIBA, where they're drawing inspiration from, Paolo Banchero had a chance to represent the Italian team and spurned them for Team USA. Joel Embiid is Cameroonian *and* obtained French citizenship before the 2024 Olympics but dissed them for Team USA. Nobody wants to cry about that because they went to represent America. But God forbid Karl-Anthony Towns represents the World (and the Dominican national team, as he has since he was a teenager).
