Generative AI systems are now routinely assisting human creators in producing 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭, 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜, 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬, 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞, and other creative outputs — blurring the boundaries between human ingenuity and machine-enabled production. Against this backdrop, the 𝐃𝐏𝐈𝐈𝐓 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐞 is currently deliberating the second part of its Working Paper on the copyrightability of AI-generated outputs. Given the far-reaching 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥, 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜, and 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 implications of these discussions, the need for structured, multi-stakeholder consultation has never been more urgent.
