The man who built this died 11 months ago at 91. He never finished it.
Zurab Tsereteli started the Chronicles of Georgia in 1985. Sixteen concrete pillars, each 35 meters tall, covered floor to ceiling in bronze reliefs depicting 3,000 years of Georgian kings, queens, heroes, and 2,000 years of Christianity. He carved an entire civilization's memory into a hilltop overlooking the Tbilisi Sea.
Then the Soviet Union collapsed. Funding evaporated overnight. The monument sat unfinished on Keeni Hill for decades. No entrance fee. No gift shop. No marketing. Just 16 pillars standing in silence over a city that was busy surviving the 1990s.
Tsereteli kept working. He built a 98-meter Peter the Great statue in Moscow that triggered protests from residents who wanted it demolished. He tried to erect a Christopher Columbus statue in New York. The city rejected it. Columbus, Ohio rejected it. Miami rejected it. Puerto Rico finally said yes. He built the "Good Defeats Evil" sculpture in front of the United Nations headquarters out of decommissioned Soviet and American nuclear missiles. He put up monuments in London, Seville, Jerusalem. Over 5,000 pieces across dozens of countries by the time he died.
Meanwhile, the unfinished monument in Tbilisi quietly became the city's second most popular tourist attraction. No completion date. No restoration budget. Locals call it Georgia's Stonehenge.
The sculptor who built it spent 40 years getting rejected and protested across every continent. The one project he never got to finish is the one the world can't stop visiting.

It’s been days without a single donation… and my heart feels so heavy.
I still need $100 just to provide food for my little daughter, Zeina.
Please, I’m asking from the bottom of my heart—don’t leave
