Sources: @Lamar_Baseball is hiring John Cannon as its new recruiting coordinator, I'm told. Cannon replaces Kyle Cheesebrough, who is now at USM. Cannon spent the 2026 campaign with Houston Christian, and previously spent six seasons as an assistant at Wharton (TX) CC.

No doubt that JUCO guys can play. Probably fewer. Use to draft a young guy, give him 4+ yrs to get “there”. Now it’s draft best, who is ready a lot sooner. Every pick is expected to be a big leaguer or why would you draft? Product has to be more ready to get there now.

@ButchBaseball29 For sure but that’s always been the case but only 12 juco players total drafted this class. I’d love to see how that compares to the last few years. I’m guessing it’s way down and that’s my point

Had a pretty good weekend at the @Texas_PG WWBA 16u South Championship.
Went 3/7 (.429) with 2 singles, 1 doubles, 1 sac fly, 2 RBI’s, 1 run scored, 2 stolen bases, and 1 walk. @ButchBaseball29 Now that’s a fact. But if we add up fall games, spring games, better summer games, then what we got?
Reality is the shutting down isn’t helping guys either. Nobody cares what you do in a lab if you can’t show it in games for extended stretches.

No doubt, but I’m taking an SEC hitter with over 700 at bats over a JUCO player with 200 at bats 99% of the time. That is data.

@ButchBaseball29 I saw where only 1 juco kid in Fl was drafted and I’m pretty sure zero in tenn were taken. That tells me there was no “data” that stood up over eyes of the scouts in the draft room for those kids. I think juco baseball is better now than ever

@ButchBaseball29 That’s not why. It’s the lack of data and technology, which is being fully addressed. I’ve heard this for years, and it’s never been more true. Saw guys with 60 and 70 grade tools passed over without objective game data being accessible.

@aria_gerson Move the draft back to the college World Series timeframe. It’s too late. If not, your suggestion is the only one that can work. Portal must stay open post draft.

People probably won’t like to hear this but the obvious solution is to tweak the portal window so it remains open through the draft. Yes, players would be cut, but players are already getting cut. Instead of the burden right now being only on freshmen bc…

Because there really isn’t any development in the minors anymore. These organizations want they think are MLB-ready players. They want to fast track through the minors to MLB. Every player drafted is NOT even close to being MLB ready. But clubs don’t care about the development because it’s a “sunk cost” to them. That’s why they want to shorten the draft to 12 rounds! It’s a shame to this beautiful game!

50 high school players drafted out of 229 picks. That’s a problem for baseball. We have officially shifted from experienced evaluators who projected athleticism, competitiveness, and upside to relying heavily on measurable data
