There is now somewhat of a north-south divide in CEE in TFR, fertility is lower in the Baltics, Poland, Belarus etc than it is in the southern areas of Eastern Europe like the Balkans or Bulgaria.

According to official numbers, the TFR of Belarus was 1.03 children per woman in 2025 (1.08 in 2024). The true TFR is higher because Belarus‘ population is smaller than the official number. In the capital Minsk, the TFR declined to 0.67 (0.69 in 2024), the lowest of any major city in Europe.

As @ArmchairW pointed out, the body exchange ratio has held remarkably steady this winter even though Ukraine has been on the counterattack and should have, theoretically, more Russian bodies to hand over. That they do not is telling.

If demographic trends hold, Europe could soon record more births than China. That would mark a genuine historical pivot. We would likely have to go back to the Qing dynasty some 300 years ago to find a comparable moment, possibly even further. For most of recorded history, China was not just bigger, it was in a different league. Now the gap is closing from both sides as Europe holds up better than expected and China ages faster than assumed. HT @benbawan

Others (presumably Guardian, Der Spiegel, NYT, Le Monde, etc.) seem to have passed. That tells its own story.
