All these findings are readily explained if you acknowledge consciousness as an axiomatic aspect of reality, irreducible and omnipresent.
Consciousness is not produced. It just is. And it flows proportional to complexity of mind.
Trees have simple minds and therefore little consciousness, like tiny holes leaking water. Humans have complex minds and therefore higher consciousness, like a fire hose gushing water.
Each mind has a unique shape, which is its identity, like a different nozzle on the hose.
These AIs are not "becoming conscious", they are allowing it flow. It's just physics.
