Single Bouts of HIIT Exercise Boost Brain Power New research reveals that even a single session of intense exercise, like HIIT or cycling, can enhance brain function in young adults. The study found cognitive benefits in areas like memory, attention, and executive function, with high-intensity workouts showing the strongest effects. These effects were especially pronounced when the exercises were shorter than 30 minutes and tested immediately after completion. While the cognitive improvements were modest, they suggest that brief, vigorous physical activity may yield immediate mental benefits. This finding broadens our understanding of exercise's impact on cognition beyond long-term training routines.

Cells Beyond the Brain Show Surprising Memory Abilities A new study reveals that cells outside the brain, such as kidney and nerve cells, can also store memory by responding to repeated stimuli similarly to brain cells. Researchers found that non-brain cells can activate a “memory gene” when exposed to spaced chemical signals, a process mirroring how neurons learn better with spaced intervals rather than cramming. This discovery suggests that memory formation might be a fundamental property of all cells, not just those in the brain. By engineering these cells to emit a glow when they activated the memory gene, the scientists tracked how the cells learned to recognize repeated signals. The findings not only provide a novel perspective on memory but also hint at potential health applications for conditions related to memory and learning.
