i walked into a store that said it was for people who live intentionally. that's me, i thought. i basked in the sun as i drank myself a strawberry banana smoothie. too much almond milk, i told myself. i did not take a selfie. i looked at what was in front of me.

had a day to myself. went down a street that had a bookstore. then discovered a road lined by vintage cars, open hoods. observed people holding hands, chatting, their faces hiding in their screens.

finally, it's in my hands. octavia butler means so much to me, her work such a beacon of light. so thankful she followed her intuition and wrote wrote wrote. i wish i could have met her. i hope to see her archive with my own eyes, to collect the information with my own hands, to share the learned experience through my lens. “so be it, see to it.” i will.

ralph ellison's invisible man won the national book award on Jan 27, 1952. making ellison the first black author to win the prestigious fiction award, recognizing its profound exploration of race, identity, and invisibility in america.  "i am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me."
