@JamesYoder Thanks for the weird quote tweet… sorry for doing multiple things at once and misspeaking. Did the message that he missed not get conveyed?

This guy is more delusional than Scam Webb
‘Rims out’ … WHAT 😂
Patrick Murphy@_Pat_Murphy
Bruce Thornton's half-court heave rims out. The last shot of his college career is a miss. TCU wins 66-64 and Ohio State's NCAA Tournament run ends after one game.

At Arkansas, football is important but it doesn't command the same respect as within Ohio State's athletic department. He wasn't going to coach at a place where a coach who, at the time, hadn't won anything, was a bigger deal and commands more respect.
And you can say he was interested, but most coaches in the country have some interest in an athletic department like Ohio State's. I can promise you the interest didn't last long, mostly because the Buckeyes still had a head coach at the time.
English

I never said it was happening but his is now coaching at a school where football is more important than basketball. Not sure where I stated Arky bball was similar to OSU football? Maybe you misread. And it doesn’t excuse the hiring of Diebler. A coach of Cal’s caliber was interested. That’s statement enough.
English

I hear this a lot with Ohio State basketball. If too many fans are only going to watch when they're good, it's going to be hard for them to become "worth watching." Also, if the expectation is the Thad Matta era, 25% of the #Buckeyes' NCAA Tournament appearances, I think that's setting up for disappointment in an age where talent distribution is more evenly spread.
Ben Stiles@sti1es1
@_Pat_Murphy I just miss the days that they were worth watching. It just is not the same. I just remember playing for Big 10 championships and being ranked high was a given.... Then Thad left....
English

@morrispartyof5 Not publicly available, so you'll just have to take my and others' word for it, I guess. This isn't really a secret.
English

@hemispheresmm Arkansas basketball is not anywhere near Ohio State football. He had issues with how the Kentucky program was treated, and that's at a basketball blueblood.
You don't have to trust me, but it was never happening.
English

@_Pat_Murphy He now coaches at a school where basketball is little brother to football. Maybe not as bad as at OSU, but the same dynamic exists there with even less history and in poorer recruiting grounds.
English

@Sdp2014Park No ass kissing. It's just hard to see the lack of support all year and then fans complain about the team not being what it was over a small part of its history.
English

@_Pat_Murphy How can you consider yourself an unbiased reporter if kissing the teams ass and pumping sunshine up the fans asses is part of your job responsibilities?
English

It's funny because one of the sources it cited was the company I work for... It references a tweet (also from someone for the company I work for) that references him having interest at the wrong time.
Either way, I can tell you that he wasn't coming to be the little brother to Ohio State's football program.
English

@_Pat_Murphy AND NO, being a "beat writer" for BuckNuts does in NO way make think you are important enough to "know better". Before bullshit credentials even fly...
English

@PhoenixMaximus2 Don't know what to tell you. You can believe AI or someone who covers the team every day.
English

@_Pat_Murphy So let's see, do I believe Pat on X, who missed the bigger point ENTIRELY, or Google and all the sources it cites.... This is a tough one...
Take a lap.

Their 2026 class hasn't played a game. We were discussing how they invested, not will invest. And Ohio State basketball has also had back-to-back good classes. They are small so they aren't ranked as high, but Diebler has proven to be a great recruiter.
Also, the transfer portal is a better sign of your NIL budget because those players ask for more money.
English

@_Pat_Murphy @mrworldwide3654 2025 and 2026 classes. That would be the last 2 recruiting classes. They’re recruiting as good as anyone their last two classes, even when basketball was apparently taking their money.
English

@meekz_16 @Rxbigboi2 People smarter than you or I are looking at ticket prices and figuring out where to go with them. If you go to low, people start to expect low prices.
The best teams in any sport have a certain level of support/investment by the fanbase.
English

@_Pat_Murphy @Rxbigboi2 As of* is better phrasing here.
I think if the athl dept acted like they cared about mens basketball a little bit more, the fans would follow
I just don't think it's fair to tell fans "you are the problem, you need to care more," while also telling them to lower expectations
English

@morrispartyof5 I know for a fact that is the case. Ohio State's NIL investment was near the bottom of the Big Ten.
English

@_Pat_Murphy Yes but I doubt Purdue invests more their basketball program than Osu does.
English

@_Pat_Murphy In my entire life, we were legit good maybe 4 times? And won nothing. Calipari wanted to be our coach, we said no, which should have resulted in criminal charges.
Figure it out. Don't care how, figure it out
English

@CoilDP You're right. There are plenty of sports teams that play in 2/3 empty arenas that are successful. C'mon now.
English

@_Pat_Murphy Companies should tell customers to buy their crap before they innovate. That’s what is being argued here. It’s never the customer’s fault. Never. Ever. You want investment then you need to invest first. They haven’t and they’re paying the price.
English

@devinwats Holtmann was widely regarded as a great hire. Fans were excited because he was similar to Matta.
While I agree their talent evaluation could be better in the portal, those players cost money. Which brings me back to my point on lack of support for the program.
English

@_Pat_Murphy There is no excuse not to be good at OSU. They botched the Holtmann hire and then inexplicably doubled down on the failure by hiring Diebler with no experience. Diebler has struck out repeatedly in the portal and been carved up late in games. Next year should be do or die.
English

I'm not sure where you're getting your recruiting rankings, but I see 19th in 2024 and 8th in 2025, boosted by Underwood, who is their second-highest-rated prospect ever.
In the modern recruiting era, basically the last 20 or years, Michigan hasn't recruited like top programs. That's why they've not sustained their level. Coming off a national championship, they won 8 games. They did that because their coach left for the NFL. The next coach wasn't fired for on-field performance.
They've not been able to gain much traction in the transfer portal because they aren't investing. It's the same as why Ohio State hasn't been able to land top transfers.
English

@_Pat_Murphy @mrworldwide3654 They’ve recruited as good as they ever have the last two years. Two years ago their class was 6th, 11th this past year.
Yep, lost 9 games. Correct. Why do you think they lost 9 games? The answer is very similar to OSU hoops. They were relieved to see him go.
English

@_Pat_Murphy do a story on what next years team has. ojiunwa, thomspon, smith. apparently nobody has any clue who rhey are. this is before the portal. there is more than just hope for osu basketball’s future.
English

@morrispartyof5 @CoilDP I get it. I wasn't calling out Buckeye fans, but simply saying it's hard to see people claim the program should be better when it isn't supported to the level they want it to be.
English

@CoilDP @_Pat_Murphy There is interest and people want them to win but for a family to spend 200$ or more to come to a game they want to see A a top 20 team. B. Future NBA stars C. Either D. Both. The team hasn't really had either much in the last 15 years
English

@morrispartyof5 Because Purdue invests more in basketball than football. Ohio State won't be doing that any time soon.
English

@_Pat_Murphy I watch almost every game every year good or bad. OSU has more history and more resources than Purdue. So why is Purdue a top 10-15 team every year for the last 10/12 years and we aren't...I think we both know the reason. Fix that problem and you fix Osu basketball.
English

@mrworldwide3654 @CoilDP First, they didn't just hire a coach. They spent money to have one of the most expensive rosters in college basketball. Also, if you think Calipari was coming to be the second-fiddle to Ryan Day, I don't know what to tell you.
English

@_Pat_Murphy @CoilDP Wow they won 8 games a year ago. They hire a coach who’s made the final four the year prior. Guess what they are now a 1 seed in basketball. Ohio state decides to hire Jake diebler😭😭. Could’ve hired calipari or may
English

@meekz_16 @Rxbigboi2 They have lots of people who are working on where ticket prices should be to make money.
And if attendance doesn't impact their finances, what do you think does?
English

@_Pat_Murphy @Rxbigboi2 This is partly true.
But they are also attempting to sell tickets to weekday games vs lesser opponents at $40 for upper deck courtside seats. If you want more fans to come out, maybe try to lower the prices
And I still don't think that impacts much of the current complaints
English
