I traveled to Belgium in the early 2000s, to pick up my son who'd spent 2 years there preaching the gospel to the wicked heathens of that land. We were in the Walloon area, and we came across some historical site. There was a big metal plaque with raised letters, explaining what had happened there. The top part of the plaque was in Dutch, the bottom part was in French. The French part had been cleaned and polished so the letters stood out clearly. The Dutch part was blackened and corroded and almost unreadable. So that was the state of affairs in Charleroi around 2004. Later we went to a restaurant in Bruges. We were having trouble communicating with the owner, so I asked my son (who speaks fluent French) if he should talk to her in French. I said, "She'd speak French, right?" He said, "Yes, she speaks French. But if I speak French to her, we'll get worse service." So we got by with broken English. Please note that Belgium is the shining gem of how all Europe can get along.

If you spend a lot of time on X, (which I do) you're exposed and absorbing a lot of the world's darkness as a byproduct. This comes with the territory and is actively promoted by the algorithm (it has better retention, more outrage, more clicks etc.). Posting about beautiful and interesting things is my small act of resistance against that. Not because I'm naive about how the world works. Not because I want to curate some sanitized highlight reel. But because beauty is also real, and I believe it deserves bandwidth too. The algorithm won't surface it for you. You have to go looking. You have to choose it. So that's what I'm trying to do here. A few times a week, something that made me pause. Something that reminded me the world is strange and vast and occasionally stunning. Consider it a corrective. A small rebalancing. Follow along if that sounds useful.
