I hope so. I found out my husband was cheating on me. Last to know. Without telling him, I took a week off and once he left for the office I did research and prepared my plan. I’m a nerd and Systems Engineer, BTW. It stood me in good stead. I found out he had accumulated credit card debt on cards I didn’t know of. For presents, jewelry, hotel stays when he was on “business trips”. I earned 4 times what he earned so it was my money he was using to court the 30 years-younger girl. By the time I sat down with him I was fully prepared. I’m not saying I wasn’t hurt. But at least he found out the respect he had for me when he met me was not unfounded. By the time he was called in for a meeting with my lawyer, She presented him with a document that had 48 attachments (or as they in today’s parlance, receipts). As I was going through the very painful process, I’d promise myself I would write a how-to book about how to go about getting a divorce, how to make a plan to protect oneself. So others wouldn’t have to go through what I did. I was educated, computer savvy and had had a good paying job. Still, no one prepares you for this very painful process. BTW, at no point was I out for revenge. My priority was to protect myself. Hurting him would have wasted my time and prolonged the agony. The best revenge is living well. Which I am..

Here’s my recommended plan: 1. When you’re sure he’s going to out for some hours, have yourself a good crying jag. No drinks, you’ll need your wits about you. 2. Once calm, gather ALL the info about your accounts (savings, bonds, loans, credit card debt, etc.). Get a clear and complete picture of your assets and debts. Save everything in a secure place ( a safety deposit box comes to mind). 3. Make an appointment with a lawyer who is NOT a friend of the family. Could be your friend though. 4. Take the child to your mother/sister/friend/babysitter for the night. 5. Have a calm conversation with him and ask for a divorce. Whatever excuse he made have given you. NO loving husband talks to ANYONE, family or friend about his beloved wife like that. No one. PS: if you don’t have a job. Go thruough steps 1-3 and look for a job. Make a budget. Once you’ve passed probationaty period, continue with steps 4-5. Let me tell you, from experience, you will not only survive, you’ll thrive. Good luck. Keep us posted.
