I’ve had a magnificent time mentoring (alongside our PPI mentor) this fab group of doctoral students at the 2024 ⁦@NIHRresearch⁩ training camp (think the Apprentice with a season packed into 2 days and for researchers) Good luck team!

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 2/n - that doesn't mean the survey was strong evidence of agreement or that the analogy was good - we need to act with good evidence - we need to avoid throwing out any babies with the bathwater. Highly regulated scope and systems to ensure this = PAs could be great for Drs + nhs

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 Was going to try to DM you as tweets are not enough to discuss this complexity, but it won't let me! As best I can here: - I absolutely agree there are issues with scope and regulation - I reckon most Dr's would probably agree too - it's not black and white 1/n

I hope PAs aren't taking the patient's entire circulatory blood volume for sampling...

@drachular @moribunddr Your handle says it all 😄 🤣 Good on you though! Better that we are all here for patients in the long run and learn to tolerate the grey than burn ourselves out chasing a neverending goal.

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 ...likely getting a higher response from those who cared more or saw the emails/tweets so are more politically active anyway. Also question design was very leading to draw out stronger responses. Doesn't demean the significance of the issues or no. responses, but not a RS sample

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 With the greatest respect, no. A stratified random sample seeks to take a small, practical sample that reflects the characteristics of the whole. This has generalisability and allows statistical testing. The BMA survey was a purposive sample - only BMA members, (continued)

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 Slightly lost on what you've written sorry re: ACF going for interview... but yes I did feel it was (and possibly still is) "off tone" for the leader of the BMA. It may be intended as a witty quip but I still don't see how it advances a constructive conversation.

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 3/n I'm very aware that an equivalent argument can be made about PA consultation process 17,000 is clearly a significant number even if its not representative. It's clearly an important topic (and I imagine we're probably on the same page about the core stuff?)

@ConkerLover @RobLaurensonD4P @DrBean3142 2/n Re: the analogy Blood sample can be assumed to represent the whole body BMA questionnaire for 5% total docs with self-admittedly leading questions (saw that post) cannot be assumed to represent all docs. So not *that* great a comparison. That said...

@oliverdevine @iDrSunny Flip this is a good paper. Not seen it before but very impressed. How long did this take??? (Even the fact you managed to get access to the timetable for each uni is impressive!!!) I can see this being useful for lots of things.

@Xeon4f145d96s1 @craniorectal @DrBean3142 @RobLaurensonD4P 3/n it's bcos of this that how we go about things must be done with the wider long term impact in mind. Yes we deserve to be paid more for what we do. Yes, we deserve better conditions. Yes, other HCPs need regulation for pt safety But we need to maintain pt trust as we do this.

@Xeon4f145d96s1 @craniorectal @DrBean3142 @RobLaurensonD4P 2/n when I (or presumably you?) see a patient, how much trust they have in us affects their outcome. Mb they delay coming or see someone else. Mb they hold something back. Mb they don't trust our advice. Our perception as a profession matters because it affects this.

@PadKnight @DrBean3142 @RobLaurensonD4P 2/2 change my mind? I don't think we have to make PAs (or any other colleagues) out to be our enemy in order to achieve any of our goals. The comment out of context (and still a little in context) feels like a derogatory pot-shot. I'm still struggling to see what it achieves.

@PadKnight @DrBean3142 @RobLaurensonD4P Point taken about context - I've read more + can now see the connection. But this would have been clearer if quoted/replied directly. Not convinced it's a great analogy but happy for that to be personal opinion. Not convinced it advances a constructive conversation. 1/2
