@Badie912 @GivnerAriel That's a generalization, do you really think that should apply to every situation lol? Obviously not. People loooove to say things they think are profound, without even thinking lol

A lot of very aggressive and extreme comments on this one so I’d like to clarify my perspective. I get the concern. Targeting kids with addictive design like infinite scroll is bad and genuinely harmful. I truly believe that. But, people are starting to treat online speech like a harmful product, driving lawsuits against social media. IMO, speech isn’t a substance. Regulating it like one opens the door to government control, pushes platforms to over-censor, and shrinks what everyone can say. That is a real concern as well. Both things can be true, but the precedent here is the real risk.
Ariel Givner@GivnerAriel

This is disgusting and I can’t wait for the appeals. The precedent set by YouTube being liable for screen-time addiction is kind of scary. Treating algorithms like a defective product opens the door to endless lawsuits over “addictive” tech. What’s next? Books, video games, junk food? What happened to personal responsibility?

Terrifying reality check. Social media algorithms use AI to figure out your exact age and specifically target children with ads and infinite scrolling. They exploit kids whose frontal lobes aren't fully developed because they know they can't stop scrolling on their own.

@elchapococco @BreitbartNews But if a company did intentionally damage a child's mental health for profit's by engineering software specifically to do that, would you view that as unethical and illegal and then would you agree with the outcome?

@_PsychoAlienCat @BreitbartNews I honestly wouldn't know. But I do know thathe majority of troubled kids and also troubled adults are a result of upbringing. Itdoesn't mean that well-raised kids can't have disorders. But parents are the first point of contact for their child and monitor what your child is up to.

Sorry, but this is obviously her parents' fault. KGM sued Meta and YouTube for the psychological damage done by social media. You're not even supposed to have these accounts until you're 13. How did the court find the platforms liable? Clearly, this is a failure of parenting!

No that’s not my point - perhaps the missing context here is my discontent with the UK government enforcing KYC + age verification on all iPhones in order to pRoTeCt ChIlDrEn It’s a slippery slope of ever growing big brother state But absolutely a child shouldn’t be able to get addicted to devices at age 9 when parents have complete control - so yes, they are to blame

@GlobalUpdates24 No doubt that dude is a skilled comedian though you can't deny that. I don't care about offending anyone either though. Erika Kirk chose to marry for clout and not love. That was her choice and that got exposed.

@ReemAmirIbrahim This is crazy - all these devices have very powerful tools built-in for parental control. You can limit specific apps, certain age content, remotely cut them off, all sorts.

The nascar video was funny. It was harmless humor and that’s why most white people didn’t care This is too far though. Beyond the blatant racism, you’re mocking a widow who had her husband assassinated in front of the world. Imagine a white person dressing up as a “black liberal women” to mock them and posting it on the internet…

@_PsychoAlienCat @prometheustakes @ReemAmirIbrahim You don't care about your kid if you apparently can't check up on them every once in a while to make sure no one is grooming them. Unless your boss threatens to blacklist you from ever getting a job again if you don't agree to work 18 hours every single day, you have no excuse.

Should gambling addicts sue casinos? Should overeaters sue supermarkets? Obviously not! So why are social media companies being sued? We're entering a world where companies that create something other people actually want are at risk of being sued, banned, or heavily regulated.

@ReemAmirIbrahim You fucking idiots. They didn't get sued for "creates something people like". Maybe try looking into the details. They prioritized profit over the safety of children by intentionally designing addictive features. You have no problem with someone preying on kids for profit?

@fuzzywalrus18 @BreitbartNews That's a strawman. A better analogy would be if alcohol companies specifically knew they were creating alcoholics, and then designed an algorithm to advertise and more easily provide more alcohol to alcoholics. And also give it to minors too.

It is a free country, people should be able to offer what they want and consumers have a responsibility as well to moderate themselves. We dont need a big brother or nanny republic... A bar sells alcohol, if you go in and have 2-3 drinks with dinner 2 nights a week that is responsible. Going 7 nights a week, getting absolutely hammered everynight is irresponsible. And people like you would probably want to sue the bar or liquor companies because you weak ass people think its addictive, when in reality. your weakness is lack of self control and accountability which you blame on others. PATHETIC.
