I do not understand the desire to make something that instantly goes into the dustbin of history as, at best, the second best CARRIE. You’re not going to outdo De Palma and Spacek.

@queensandal True, but there is also unfortunately the normie “prestige” of Broadway, name recognition Tony Awards vs the Lortel Awards. While I fully agree that a lot of the magic of live theater is Off-Broadway right now, I still think that there should be options for smaller shows to have.

@_RickWilson I know you guys are broadway fan kids but a lot of these problems you’re speaking of could be solved if a lot of these shows just stayed off Broadway instead of trying to force a Broadway run. No need for more large theaters.

Broadway needs more 500-800 seat theaters. So many shows can’t come in because we only have barns and the ones that do come in wouldn’t have flopped as hard in smaller homes. (Tammy Faye, Beaches) We can’t just keep fighting over the Booth forever.

@cfosterrrr Disaster for load-in/load-out sadly. It only has access to 42nd St and they wouldn’t be able to take up that space during that time. Other theaters like the Todd Haimes at least have access to 43rd as well to do their load-in/loud-out process.

On another note, the fact that the Liberty Theatre and the Times Square theatre are just there in stasis makes me sad. I know the Times Square Theatre can probably never be returned to legitimate theatre… the Liberty could be converted again if they cared to. It’s right there!

@RodrigoICruz I lowkey should have just said something like Swept Away or something else in the Longacre. I think that my thought process was sound, but Beaches had recency bias. 😭

@_RickWilson I hear you, but smaller houses wouldn't have helped BEACHES or TAMMY FAYE. BEACHES could barely sell/give away 300 tickets to a show. When I saw it we were 2 of 30 people in the front MEZZ, while no one was sat behind us. It's a matter of quality not size of house,

@SpencerSher_ I suppose it would be hypocritical of me to want to remove several off-Broadway for a single Broadway house, hehe. You’re right. I wish commercial real estate wasn’t a dumpster fire. Let ALW have his dream of owning a Broadway house by having him just build his own, tbh!

@_RickWilson I love the vibe of NWS being larger off broadway theaters and losing them would be a real hit to commercial off broadway, but Stage 42 hasn’t had a hit in it since Yiddish Fiddler- it’s time to add that extra seat!
