Exclusive: Ministers are reviewing a £2 billion environmental levy that critics labelled a “shopping stealth tax” in a move designed to reduce the impact of soaring food prices caused by the Iran war, The Times has been told The Bank of England last week warned that inflation could rise to 6.2 per cent by the start of 2027, and as much as 7 per cent on food Now the government is looking at the extended producer responsibility (EPR) tax, under which food producers and online retailers are liable to pay a charge for every item of packaging they use in the products they sell. The industry says that the tax is equivalent to 12p for every glass bottle or jar sold in a supermarket and up to 6p for plastic containers. The tax, which will be passed on to consumers, was expected to add as much as £56 to household costs annually, while raising £1.4 billion for councils Ministers are looking at the tax as part of a series of measures to try to reduce the economic impact of the Iran war on consumers thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…
