The moment someone reaches Ceuta, they come under EU asylum rules and may become eligible for regularization programs such as the one recently introduced by the Sánchez government. The Spanish Supreme Court has also ruled that migrants who arrive by swimming cannot be sent back. Everyone warned how absurd it is.

Ceuta is paying the price for the Spanish Government’s massive regularisation, the failure to enforce EU return rules and its repeated delays in implementing the Migration Pact. Sánchez has lost control of Spain’s external border and his failure is now a European problem. Europe cannot tolerate a government that fails to protect an external EU border and expects the rest of Europe to bear the consequences.
