I’m doing what I’m doing, and we’ll see how it turns out.” — Harold Cohen,1970 Walked into M+ museum this morning after some meetings , just stealing an hour for myself between the chaos of Art Basel week. A small screen in the corner of a room stopped me cold. Harold Cohen. AARON. A pioneering “Ai art project” from the 1970s that most artists here working at the intersection of art and technology have probably never heard of and honestly should. Cohen was a painter who gave up the brush to chase a single obsession: could an algorithm genuinely make art? Not assist. Not generate on command. Actually make. He built AARON to do exactly that, a system that moved a plotter across canvas autonomously, choosing colours, composing forms, making decisions. He never called it a tool. He called it his collaborator. At the World Expo ’85 in Tsukuba, he let AARON sign the work. That moment, a machine signing a painting in 1985, is the bridge between Cohen’s studio and everything happening right now. Today everyone has something to say about AI and art. It’s messy, political, exciting, exhausting often all at once. I’m here in Hong Kong with my gallery Plan X, presenting works by @ThankYouX & @ClaireSilver at @ArtBasel Zero 10 that live right inside this conversation . Artists who use technology not as a shortcut, but as the actual substance of their practice. Being part of this feels like a privilege, and it means a lot that Art Basel is giving this conversation the space it deserves. People like @eli_schein @redbeardnft and many others here are a big part of why, doing extraordinary work to support artists, help them grow, and keep these conversations alive and moving forward. Watching that video this morning felt like something clicked into place. Cohen was sitting with all of this before most of us were born. No community, no validation. The tools changed. The noise got louder. The question never did. Fifty years later, here we are. For every artist in this space who sometimes wonders if what they’re doing matters,Cohen wondered too. He just never stopped.
