I find it strange that every few years, some Africans argue about whether their own native language is “useful.” A language is not valuable because it gets you a job. A language is valuable because it carries the memory of a people. English connects you to the world but your mother tongue connects you to your identity, your history, your grandparents, your culture, and a way of thinking that cannot be fully translated. The future belongs to people who can preserve who they are while engaging the world. The real advantage is raising a child who can think, dream, and express themselves fluently in their local language, while also communicating confidently in English and other global languages.

Some became famous across Nigeria, while others reached audiences throughout Africa and the diaspora without abandoning their language. Let me mention a few. Singing in Igbo strengthened their identity and made their music distinctive. Listeners who don't understand every word still connect with the rhythm, emotion, melody, and performance. Tufiakwa! I speak seven languages, so I don't see why this has to be an either/or discussion. English and French do open doors professionally no one is denying that. But is your culture not valuable too? A language doesn't have to be commercially valuable to be valuable. Once your family loses Igbo, it's probably gone forever. English and French will still be there regardless. You don't teach Igbo because it'll get your child a promotion. You teach it because it's part of who they are.

Crazy thing is i have argued this with my own father a thousand times, they are always pissed my kids speak French and English but not igbo and my response is simple: The world is progressing but Nigeria regresses on a daily, most people are running away from the country and 10 out of 10 times they will not use Igbo for anything in a white man’s land, speaking French and English or any globally recognised language will open far better doors for your kids than igbo or Yoruba will unless they have plans to become Igbo or Yoruba movies actors or artistry. Now it doesn’t mean if i have the opportunity to teach them igbo i wouldn’t but i will prioritise a language that will help their lives in adulthood than anything else.

There is nothing strategic about raising children who cannot speak their own native language. Every excuse is a convenient cover for parental failure. You did not prepare them for the future. You disconnected them from their roots. A child can learn multiple languages. The one they should never lose because of your choices is their own. Ka m bịakwanụ.
