Our plant in Boden will produce millions of tonnes of green steel per year, but how will we get all the materials in and out of the plant? Adjacent to our own plant construction project, Polar Structure and Boden Municipality are building an infrastructure corridor, featuring a new railway, road, and pedestrian and bike path, which will be used to transport material to and from the factory. Most of it will be transported by rail, meaning we are also constructing a large rail yard at the site. So how big will it be? – More than 11km of tracks – 18 grinding switches – 196 catenary poles – More than 8km of power cables

We're in MIT Technology Review! Stegra is featured in the latest issue of MIT Technology review, with green steel listed among ten breakthrough technologies for 2025. "Stegra, a Swedish startup, has raised nearly $7 billion to build such a plant in Boden, in northern Sweden. It will make hydrogen by splitting water with electrolysis, using clean electricity supplied by a mix of wind and hydropower. The plant is on track to begin production in 2026, which could make it the first industrial-scale operation of its kind." Learn more: technologyreview.com/2025/01/03/110…

As we get into full swing in the new year, there's progress all over our construction site in Boden! In the foreground, you can see the first electrolyzer building going up at the green hydrogen plant, while far off in the top right corner, our cold rolling mill is taking shape. 🏗️

We recently raised the first steel at our green hydrogen plant in Boden! The facility, which will feature more than 700 megawatts of electrolyzer capacity, will be among the largest green hydrogen plants in the world when complete. From there, we will deliver green hydrogen directly to our adjacent green iron plant, where it will be used to reduce iron ore into green iron.

Season's greetings from Stegra! Our team has put up a Christmas tree at the construction site in Boden! Keeping in mind Stegra's commitment to sustainability in our construction process, the tree was built using recycled materials from the factory.

What a year it has been! After starting 2024 by securing more than €6.5 billion in project financing, progress in Boden has moved ever more quickly on our way to kicking off production of green steel in 2026. Our team has grown to more than 300 full-time employees, with nearly 2000 construction workers on site every day building the world's first large-scale green hydrogen, green iron and green steel plant. Check out the timelapse of our progress this year! ⤵️

How do we actually produce green steel? Our plant in Boden is based on our three platforms – green hydrogen, green iron and green steel. While the biggest emissions reduction results when we replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen in the iron reduction step, we aren't stopping there. In our green steel mill, we will use induction and electrical heaters instead of gas-fired furnaces. And by having all our production in the same place, from the green hydrogen plant all the way to the cold rolling mill, we can optimize the flow for maximum efficiency at scale.

🏗️ Yesterday, exactly one year after the first steel was raised at the hot side of our steel plant, the first steel construction was raised at the cold rolling mill! 🏗️ This is a big milestone for us, as the cold rolling mill is where we will produce most of our end products, such as cold rolled and galvanized steel. We are excited for more progress to come!

Last week our lenders visited us in Boden! Around 80 representatives from banks and investment funds came to see and experience the progress we have made on our plant, and to celebrate some of the big financing milestones from the past few quarters. The group also got the chance to sign a steel beam that is now mounted in the steel mill! Getting the Boden project financing in place required a lot from our investors and lenders to understand our business case and to get through the large, complex financing package required for an industrial decarbonisation project of this scale. So it’s special to be able to show our lenders how far we’ve come! Thanks for coming to Boden!

Why is green iron key for green steel? This step is where most of the emission reductions occur when compared to traditional steelmaking. By reducing iron ore with green hydrogen instead of fossil fuels, the main byproduct is water instead of carbon dioxide. Powered by renewable energy, our direct reduction reactor is an essential part of our process, making it possible for us to produce green steel at scale.

A Stegra shoutout from the President of the European Commission! Last week in her introductory remarks at the Renewable Hydrogen Summit in Brussels, President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted Stegra as a frontrunner in the green industrial transition and among the largest renewable hydrogen projects globally! We are grateful for the recognition, as well as the support of the European Innovation Fund.
