Harvest areas can be dangerous where heavy equipment is constantly moving around and trees are being felled. In thinning environments especially, visibility is very low and the skilled operators are focused on the job at hand and may not see or hear people nearby.

Safety is our top priority! We currently have an active harvest underway near Goldsmith Lake in Annapolis County. During all active forestry operations, safety is our number one priority – for our workers and for members of the public.

#DYK Before a single tree is harvested on Western Crown land in Nova Scotia, it goes through a careful, multi-step planning and approval process to ensure it’s done responsibly? Here's a quick look at how it works:

Only 34 hectares of the original 80-hectare footprint (42%) will be harvested – with the best 70% of trees left to grow after harvesting is complete. Meanwhile two stands of Old Growth Forest (30ha) immediately between the harvest area and the lake itself will remain untouched.

🟢4 rare lichen locations (with 100m buffers) 🟢2 black ash trees (with 200m buffers) 🟢An "ecology corridor" connecting watercourses, wetland, old growth, and game trails to Goldsmith Lake itself.

Ecological forestry doesn’t just mean harvesting fewer trees, it means managing our forest with ecology as the very top objective. Learn about the Goldsmith Lake harvest plan and how WestFor is implementing Lahey recommendations in the area.

It’s a big shift from how things were done in the '70s—proof that forestry is evolving.

This means that approximately 70% of the trees in the 34-hectare parcel will remain and continue to grow.
