Born on this day: Lygia Pape ✨ A seminal figure in the Concrete art movement and a founding member of the Neo-Concrete movement, #LygiaPape (1927–2004) played a defining role in the development of contemporary art in Latin America. A solo exhibition of works by Pape was on view at #WhiteCube #Seoul last year. Tracing the trajectory of her experimental five-decade career, the presentation showcased some of Pape’s most renowned works across drawing, sculpture and installation, including her ‘Ttéia’ series – immersive geometric installations made up of metallic threads, traversing and intersecting one another across the gallery space. On View: ‘Sara Flores. Non Nete. A Dream for an Indigenous Nation’ at the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) Marking Sara’s first institutional show and the first solo presentation by a Shipibo-Conibo artist at MALI, the exhibition showcases a new body of work inspired by the dream of Indigenous self-determination. Translating to ‘our world’, ‘Non Nete’ serves as the central theme of the exhibition, conveying the interdependence of all life forms and the interconnectedness of different realms. The works on view highlight the political dimension inherent to Sara’s practice, most notably through her design for the Shipibo Nation Flag, which embodies the principles of ecofeminism and deep ecology. 📍‘Non Nete. A Dream for an Indigenous Nation’ is on view at MALI, Lima until 17 August 2025. 🔗Learn more: whitecube.art/Sara-Flores-MA… Images: Images: Portrait of Sara Flores. Last chance to visit #AliaAhmad ‘Fields / ميادين ’ at #WhiteCube #MasonsYard (until 5 April 2025) ✨ Alia’s responsive and embodied approach to painting explores how the medium of paint – unpredictable and at times resistant to control – can register the variations and fluctuations of local weather patterns. Speaking to Galerie Magazine, the artist said: ‘Texture, line, and the movement of paint are used in an attempt to capture elements of the Saudi landscape as a whole.’ 📍 Visit ‘Fields / ميادين ’ at White Cube Mason’s Yard until 5 April 2025. Closing Soon: Theaster Gates ‘1965: Malcolm in Winter: A Translation Exercise’ at #WhiteCube #Bermondsey In the final week of the exhibition, we’re taking a look back at some of our favourite photos of the show. ‘1965: Malcolm in Winter: A Translation Exercise’ connects #TheasterGates's exploration of Black radical histories with the methods of care and preservation nurtured in Japanese philosophy and craftsmanship. Demonstrating his approach to archival care across social spheres – through material culture, sculpture, film, ritual, architecture, and music – Gates makes visible the investment of Japanese allies, like Ei Nagata and Haruhi Ishitani, that can be mobilised to express and articulate a Black politic. 📆 Don’t miss the last chance to see the exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey, before it closes on 6 April 2025. 🔗 Learn more: whitecube.art/TheasterGates-… Photos © White Cube (Alex Merz). #London #WhiteCubeBermondsey

In Focus: #DavidAltmejd’s ‘The Serpent’ (2025) at White Cube New York ✨🐍 Entering the first floor of the gallery, we are met with ‘The Serpent’, a monumental, winding serpent, composed of a chain of conjoined human heads, with its own head lifting to meet that of its conjurer, ‘Snake Charmer’. The reciprocal relationship between these two sculptures enacts a dialogue between creation and creator, between matter and design – a tension that David both interrogates and exalts. 📍 ‘David Altmejd: The Serpent’ is on view at #WhiteCubeNewYork until 19 April 2025. On View: Alia Ahmad ‘Fields / میادین ’ at White Cube Mason’s Yard (until 5 April 2025) The exhibition debuts a new body of work that deepens Alia’s dialogue with the Saudi terrain, tracing its environmental dichotomies alongside the fluid interdependencies of climate, landscape and human presence. Informed by her memories and lived experience of Riyadh, #AliaAhmad embraces a nuanced, localised sensitivity to shifting weather patterns and cycles of vegetation. The artist said: ‘I hope the paintings encourage viewers to consider the layered relationships between rhythm, space and the physical characteristics of the region's diverse environment.’ 📍 Visit the exhibition at #WhiteCube #MasonsYard, London until 5 April 2025. 🔗 Learn more: whitecube.art/AliaAhmad-Maso… Images: Alia Ahmad, ‘Fields / ميادين’, White Cube Mason's Yard, 28 February – 5 April 2025 © the artist. Theaster Gates: ‘It was a space that I made so that the conversation of revolutionary thought could continue.’ ‘Malcolm’s Hut’ (2025) draws inspiration from traditional Japanese tea houses, a central social and ceremonial cornerstone of Japanese culture. Connecting #TheasterGates’s exploration of Black histories with the ethos of care and respect embedded in Japanese culture, the work’s title underscores his endeavour to unearth and make visible, the intersections of Blackness within Japan. On the back wall hangs a black Obi with three gold embroidered Black Power fists and an inscription of the date that Malcolm X was assassinated: 21 February 1965, created in partnership with Hosoo Textiles. In ‘Malcolm’s Hut’, the artist conceives the work as a hermitage for the exchange of ideas and discourse, a site for contemplation and deep revolutionary reflection. 👉 ‘Malcolm’s Hut’ is on view in Theaster Gates ‘1965: Malcolm in Winter: A Translation Exercise’ at #WhiteCube #Bermondsey, until 6 April 2025. 🔗 Learn more: whitecube.art/TheasterGates-… Video: © White Cube (Lee Pretious).

In Focus: Shao Fan, ‘Rabbit 1624’ (2024) at Art Basel Hong Kong (booth 1C23) Deeply rooted in Chinese cultural symbolism, the rabbit represents longevity, luck and intelligence, as well as linking to the moon and the mythical Jade Rabbit, a celestial figure believed to reside on the moon in Chinese folklore. Built up through fine brushstrokes meticulously layered over hours of work, ‘Rabbit 1624’ is a delicate and contemplative ink-on-rice-paper work. Delicate washes of ink applied in repetitive, precise strokes create an ethereal softness suggesting both presence and impermanence. The work transcends realism, dissolving the boundaries between form and emptiness, and reflecting the fleeting nature of existence. 📍 View ‘Rabbit 1624’ at White Cube’s booth (1C23) at Art Basel Hong Kong until 30 March 2025. 🔗 Learn more: whitecube.art/ArtBaselHongKo… Images: Shao Fan, ‘Rabbit 1624’, 2024 © Shao Fan. © Shao Fan Studio. #WhiteCube #ArtBaselHongKong #ABHK #ShaoFan #Artfair

Now Open: ‘Lynne Drexler: The Seventies’ at White Cube Hong Kong (until 17 May 2025)✨ The exhibition debuts #LynneDrexler's 1970s works, which, hovering between landscape, still life and abstraction, engage with the debate on painting's representational unity. The artist’s increasingly abstract focus on shape, colour and formal relationality demonstrates a desire to capture, in paint or crayon, an encounter with the world as vibrating energy, rendering visuality as sensation and metamorphosis. 📍‘Lynne Drexler: The Seventies’ is on view at #WhiteCube #HongKong until 17 May 2025. 🔗Learn more: whitecube.art/LynneDrexler-H… Images: ‘Lynne Drexler: The Seventies’, White Cube Hong Kong, 26 March – 17 May 2025 © The Lynne Drexler Archive.
