I'm struggling today. I'm just going to admit it; put it out there. Because I assume I'm not alone. At my age I've seen a lot. But this is my first-and will be my last-Fourth Turning winter. Coupled with AI and the breakdown in our institutions it feels like an endless assault on the senses. Two decades ago I went through the worst period of my life. It lasted over a year. Sometimes I didn't want to get out of bed. What carried me through that time was the idea that I had to just keep going. All I had to do was to put one foot in front of the other. To get through the next five minutes. Those five minutes stretched into getting through the morning. The day. And I found faith. Of all the things I've done in my life--working underground, the oil fields--it was that period where I was completely humbled that helped me become the man I am today. That strengthened me. Forged me. This is a difficult time. For our nation. For those you love. And it's coming to a conclusion. Even today, while struggling with the recent impacts of AI on my family--AI is definitely taking jobs!--and the loss of faith and trust in institutions, I know that I have the strength to just carry on. To do what's right. You will have that strength too. This period in history is going to test you like no other; the Winter cycle in the Fourth Turning that you will tell your kids about. But like my period 2 decades ago of "being in the desert and sitting among ashes", you will come out humbled, strengthened, and forged in steel. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other. To keep going. To be there.
