An extremely rare and breathtaking sight was recently captured over the skies of Japan: a luminous full Moon suspended perfectly inside a vibrant rainbow. At first glance, it looks like pure magic—like the Moon has slipped into a cosmic halo of color. But this stunning image is actually a masterful optical illusion born from perfect alignment, timing, and perspective.Rainbows form when sunlight is refracted, reflected, and dispersed by millions of raindrops in the air, creating a colorful arc always positioned in the part of the sky directly opposite the Sun. The full Moon, hanging far in the distance, simply happened to line up exactly with that arc from the photographer’s precise viewpoint on the ground. From that single spot, on that exact moment, the Moon appeared nestled right inside the rainbow’s embrace.In reality, the Moon isn’t physically “inside” the rainbow at all—the rainbow is much closer, formed by droplets in Earth’s atmosphere, while the Moon is 384,000 kilometers away. It’s a breathtaking line-of-sight coincidence: the right rain shower, the right angle of sunlight, a full Moon rising or setting, and a lucky photographer in exactly the right place.These moments are fleeting and incredibly rare.
